| Project Title: | Nitrogen Removal from Landfill Leachate by ANAMMOX Process in Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (An MBR) |

| My research is about nitrogen management in landfill leachate as high ammonia concentration creates oxygen demand and ammonia toxicity. Conventional biological method deployed for treatment via aerobic nitrification and anoxic denitrification requires external carbon dosage and results in high sludge production. These limitations are overcome by applying emerging processes such as ANAMMOX (Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation). ANAMMOX is a novel biological Nitrogen removal option, which removes ammonia without oxygen along with nitrite as the electron acceptor. My research work centers on examining the role and diversity of ANAMMOX bacteria under varying Ammoniacal nitrogen concentrations. This will be achieved by performing identification and confirmation of the presence and diversity of ANAMMOX populations in the biological system. | |
